What is Well-Women Care?

Well-woman care is a comprehensive approach to women's health that focuses on preventive care, early detection of health problems, and promotion of overall well-being. It involves regular check-ups with a healthcare provider to assess physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Importance of Regular Well-Women Checkups

Regular well-woman checkups are essential for maintaining optimal health. They can help:

  • Early detection of health problems: Early detection of conditions like cancer, STIs, and other health issues can lead to more effective treatment.
  • Prevention of diseases: Certain lifestyle factors and medical interventions can help prevent serious health problems.
  • Promoting overall health: Well-woman exams can help you maintain a healthy weight, manage stress, and improve your overall quality of life.

What To Expect During Well-Woman Exams

Your well-woman exam is tailored to your specific age and stage of life. Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

Ages 18-39

Well-woman exams include a pelvic exam and pap smear, as well as contraception, pregnancy, and cervical cancer screening. Your PVHC Premier Medicine family physician will also screen for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune diseases like lupus and arthritis.

Annual pelvic exams and pap smears are crucial for early detection and treatment of common conditions, including:

  • Adnexal masses
  • Fibroids
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic pain
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Polyps
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD)
  • Vaginitis
  • Vulvovaginal pain syndromes

Ages 40-64

It’s common for biological women in this age group to begin experiencing menstrual changes associated with perimenopause and menopause. Menopause causes hormone levels to drop, which can directly affect bone density. That’s why monitoring hormone levels and overall wellness during this stage is essential.

Other standard health screenings include:

  • Bone density
  • Cholesterol
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Thyroid

We also provide screening mammograms for biological women over 40. If precancerous lesions are found, we offer preliminary treatment and refer the patient to a PVHMC Premier Medicine specialist for further testing and treatment.

Ages 65+

Your well-woman exam will continue to be important for maintaining your health as you age. Older women should continue seeing their PVHC Premier Family physician yearly to promote successful aging and learn about disease prevention.

In addition to their annual well-woman exam, women in this age group should be monitored for the following conditions:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Certain types of cancers (e.g., ovarian, cervical, and skin)
  • Chronic lower respiratory disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sexual or physical abuse
  • Unintentional injuries (accidents)

From routine screening and pregnancy to menopause and beyond, we offer more comprehensive coverage beyond regular OBGYN care. You deserve excellent women’s health services from a skilled family doctor who knows your health history.

PVHC Family Medicine physicians are passionate about education and providing any guidance, resources, or information you need to make the best decisions about your health through every stage of your life.
