What Is Preventive Care?

Preventive care helps prevent health problems or find them before they become serious.

We cannot express the importance of preventive care enough. It helps identify health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or even certain cancers earlier, when they are the most treatable.

Understanding your health risks and learning how to manage them early helps improve your overall health and reduce your risk of developing other health conditions.

What Is Covered Under Preventive Care?

At Pomona Valley Health Centers, we provide several preventive care services for men, women, and children, including:

Adult Preventive Care Service

Our preventive care services for adults include the following:

• Annual lung cancer screenings for adults aged 50 and up who are at high risk
• Blood pressure screening
• Colon cancer screening (adults aged 45 and up)
• Full medical examinations
• Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) testing
• Prediabetes screening
• Retinopathy screening for chronic diabetes
• Testing and counseling for sexually transmitted infections (STI)
• Tuberculosis infection screening

Preventive health care also includes consultations with a physician about the following issues:

• Personal medical history
• Family medical history (heart disease, cancer, mental illness, or any other conditions that tend to run in families)
• History of depression or other mental health disorders
• History of alcohol, tobacco, or narcotics use
• Sexual history and activity

Preventive Care for Women

Our preventive care services for women include the following:

• Bone density screening
• Breast cancer genetic test counseling (BRCA)
• Mammography screening
• Cervical cancer screening
• Diabetes screening
• STD and STI screening
• Urinary incontinence screening with PAP
• Well-woman visits
• Pre- and post-pregnancy screenings

Children’s Preventive Care

Pomona Valley Health Centers offer pediatric preventive care for children from 0-18 years of age.

Our preventative care services for children include the following:

• Age-appropriate full preventive medical examinations
• Autism screening
• Behavioral assessments
• Blood pressure screening
• Developmental screening and surveillance
• Lead exposure screening
• Obesity screening
• Skin cancer checks and screening
• Tobacco use screening
• Tuberculosis infection screening
• Vaccinations
• Vision screening

We encourage prevention counseling and testing for children and adolescents at risk of acquiring STIs. Moreover, we screen children and adolescents for depression and other mental health concerns.

We encourage parents and guardians to discuss the following with their child’s pediatric care physician:

• Strategies for preventing adolescent alcohol and drug use
• Strategies for preventing unintended pregnancies
• Behavioral concerns
• Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents at risk of HIV exposure
• Family medical history

Patients who smoke or have drug or alcohol use disorders are also encouraged to discuss cessation strategies during their preventive care appointments.
