What Is a Fracture?

A fracture is any type of break or crack in a bone, often resulting from a significant blow to the body. Fractures can range from small hairline cracks to complete breaks that break through the skin.

Types of Fractures (Hairline, Compound, Stress & More)

  • Stress (hairline)
Small cracks caused by repetitive stress or overuse.
  • Avulsion
Occurs when a tendon or ligament pulls away a small piece of bone. These are often caused by sudden changes in direction.
  • Pathologic
Caused by weakened bones due to conditions like osteoporosis.
  • Compression
A fracture caused when bones are forced against each other. These most commonly occur in the spine.
  • Compound (open)
A break that pierces the skin, increasing infection risk.
  • Simple (closed)
A break that does not pierce the skin but still needs proper care.

Common Causes of Bone Fractures

Bone fractures are almost always the result of trauma. Anything that impacts bones with enough force can break them. Common causes of bone fractures include:

  • Car accidents.
  • Falls.
  • Sports-related injuries.
  • Direct blows.

Fracture Symptoms & When to Seek Care

Signs You May Have a Fracture

If you are concerned you may have sustained a bone fracture, look for these warning signs:

  • Sharp or intense pain.
  • Swelling and bruising.
  • Pain that worsens with movement or touch.
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • A visible deformity or misalignment.
  • Difficulty moving or bearing weight on the injured area.

Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room for Fractures

If you think you may have a fractured bone, seek urgent medical attention. Pomona Valley Health Centers provides urgent care treatment for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, including fractures.

Go to urgent care for:

  • Minor fractures that are not life-threatening.
  • Minor fractures where the skin is intact and the bone is not visibly displaced or causing significant deformity.
  • Minor fractures where some movement is still possible.
  • Minor fractures requiring a splint or cast.

If you have a compound (open) fracture, see bone protruding from the skin, or a fracture involving the spine, head, or torso, go to your nearest emergency room for specialized fracture care and treatment.

Go to an emergency room for:

  • Severe, open fractures where bone is visible.
  • Severe fractures where the bone is causing significant deformity.
  • Any fractures involving the head, spine, or torso.
  • Any fracture involving heavy bleeding or severe pain.
  • Any fracture where movement is not possible.
  • Any fracture requiring surgical intervention.

Can Urgent Care Diagnose and Treat Fractures?

Urgent Care Fracture Treatment

How Urgent Care Centers Assess Fractures

When you visit our urgent care center, you can expect to undergo an X-ray imaging to assess your fracture. This helps us quickly determine the nature and extent of your injury and provide accurate treatment.

X-Rays and Diagnostic Tools Used in Urgent Care

In urgent care fracture treatment, X-rays are the preferred diagnostic tool. However, more detailed imaging (e.g., ultrasounds, CT scans, and MIR imaging) may sometimes be necessary.

Splinting, Casting, and Pain Management Options

Depending on the severity and location of your bone fracture, the following treatments may be required:

  • Splinting
This is often used for initial stabilization while allowing any swelling to subside.
  • Casting
This provides more complete immobilization and support.
  • Pain management

Depending on the severity of your bone fracture, your provider may recommend over-the-counter pain medications or prescribe stronger medications.
